My vote for this year's best video game composer: Marty O'Donnell
I found Chris Anderson's posting on Halo 3 yesterday on The Long Tail blog, and was intrigued by this interview with Bungie Studios' Marty O'Donnell, composer of the Halo theme music and Bungie audio director. That got me to watch and listen to the E3 trailer from 2006 for Halo 3 shown below.
I was blown away by the trailer, by the visuals, but most importantly, by the music. It's what makes the trailer come alive and grip you. It made me want to buy and play the game. In my opinion, that music and the associated trailer are probably the best video game marketing I've ever seen. It's not easy to tell an entire story in two minutes, but the Halo 3 trailer does that and more. Whoever is running Bungie's marketing seriously knows what they are doing.
UPDATE: There's a very good "Making of the Trailer" documentary on Bungie's site here where you can see some of the footage in high-definition. Even if you don't have the horsepower to view the footage in 720p, the Quicktime videos are still spectacular to look at. I can't link to the actual movie due to the Bungie's need to verify your age due to "artistic" language used in the film.
Full disclosure: I have no positions or interests in Bungie Studios or Microsoft, its parent company.
