iPhone TV ads say June 29 is THE day for a sidewalk sleepover
For those who have been TiVO'ing through their commercials, Apple has just started running three new iPhone TV ads (the link goes to the high quality versions at Apple), the first of which debuted on 60 Minutes Sunday night. All ads say that the iPhone will arrive on June 29. That's June all right -- but just barely.
As an aside, the ads themselves are at Apple's usual level of minimalist professionalism, visually demonstrating how different the iPhone is from other phones. They show the iPod being used as a music player, an internet browser, and a video viewer, but always end with it being used for its primary function: as a phone. I see them functioning as basic awareness ads, trying to position the iPhone as a unique and desirable consumer product. All that said, I expect they will still fuel the already large demand for the limited supply of phones over the next few months. We may not have people sleeping outside Apple and Cingular stores for a week as there were for the Playstation 3 launches, but I'd bet money on the sidewalks being occupied for a few days at least.
