First indications of hurricane-driven inflation

Today's report of growth in the manufacturing sector has some sobering data on price inflation due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita. It notes that the wholesale price index rose about 15% in September, which followed a 14% rise in August. Sadly, this is one more piece of data that confirms our previous post that we are in for an economic triple-whammy that will dramatically hurt this year's holiday sales. Marketers should start putting on their thinking caps now for how to move products when consumers are saddled with $1,000 heating bills; it isn't going to be a fun Christmas.
